Hartford County resident James Sanders of East Granby was arrested on Monday morning, May 13 following an incident on Interstate 91 North in Windsor, Connecticut State Police announced.
According to authorities, around 11:20 p.m. on Tuesday, May 12, a vehicle crashed on I-91 North in the area of Exit 40. Arriving police saw that Sanders was showing signs of impairment as he told them he had crashed into the highway's center median.
An investigation conducted by troopers determined that Sanders had entered Interstate 91 from the Exit 40 on-ramp in the correct direction. He then traveled across all three lanes in a perpendicular direction and collided with the center median, authorities said.
Police added that after the collision, Sanders then turned left and began driving the wrong way down the highway until his vehicle became disabled.
No other people were involved in the incident and no injuries were reported.
After his arrest, Sanders was charged with:
- Operating under the influence;
- Failure to maintain proper lane;
- Reckless driving;
- Driving the wrong way;
- Operating without insurance;
- First-degree reckless endangerment.
Sanders was later released on a $25,000 non-surety bond and will appear in Hartford Superior Court on Thursday, May 30.
